DATE MOVIE
At my drama school we were given some homework to analyse something that we wouldn’t necessarily read, listen to, watch etc. I decided to watch a movie created by Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedburg called Epic Movie, a movie I never had any intention of watching (and no, I don’t have any intention of watching Meet the Spartans either…unless requested). Since I’m going to be unfortunately watching Epic Movie tomorrow, I thought it would be appropriate for me to review Aaron Seltzer’s and Jason Friedburg’s previous film Date Movie.
Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan) is a very unattractive woman but her life changes when she meets Grant Fockyerdoder (Adam Campbell). As the two become lovers, Grant decides to marry Julia. But if they are going to marry, then they must meet each other’s parents; Julia’s father, Frank (Eddie Griffin), Julia’s mother, Linda (Meera Simhan), and Grant’s father, Bernie (Fred Willard) and his mother, Roz (Jennifer Coolidge) - and Julia must also meet Grant’s ex-fiance, Andy (Sophie Monk) who is still in love with Grant and plans to marry him before Julia does.

Date Movie is a spoof on romantic comedies. What a brilliant idea, spoofing romantic comedies – but that idea had to be wasted on this?!
The two writers and directors of Date Movie seem to go short on gags and decide to make it up to the audience by throwing in unnecessary spoofs and cameos to try and keep the audience amused but I guess not that many people who saw this movie actually were. It even feels they were throwing in spoofs just for the sake of it and also because they were aware of the fact that they were making a spoof in general – but they obviously weren’t aware that they weren’t making very good one.
But I won’t say that this movie was terrible all the way through. There were a few funny moments but I did say a ‘few’ – and I mean a ‘few’. I even found myself being quite amused at the spoof of When Harry Met Sally… (I was aware that the spoof was plain silly but I couldn’t help but be amused) and there is also a funny scene set in a lift.
But as whole, Date Movie is definitely one of the worst spoofs I’ve ever seen.

Cameo appearances to sustain the duration? Now there’s a sure sign of poor quality.
